Shine Well: Why Health Is a Lifestyle, Not a Quick Fix

Yesterday I attended the 20th Annual Cleveland State University Shine WellFest at the Student Center.

And one message kept echoing in my mind:

Health and wellness is a lifestyle — not a temporary practice.

There is never a wrong time to start becoming a healthier you.

But let’s be honest.

In our American culture, we are constantly sold the opposite message.

The Lie of the Quick Fix

A pill.

A shot.

A celebrity-endorsed supplement.

A 30-day transformation.

We are told there’s a shortcut.

And I see it. I hear it. I read it.

Sometimes it honestly infuriates me.

When celebrities promote products they’re being paid to endorse, I’m not listening. Not because I think I know everything — but because I know this:

There are no sustainable quick fixes.

Fundamental change is possible.

Sometimes it’s even critical.

But it is never accidental.

And it is never instant.

What Happens When It Stops?

What happens when:

The shots stop? The pills run out? The extreme diet ends? The 75-day challenge is over?

If the habits underneath never changed, the results won’t last.

My husband and I used to watch The Biggest Loser. I’ll be honest — it inspired me. It fired me up. It played a role in motivating me to train for and run a marathon.

But here’s the hard truth:

Many contestants gained the weight back. Some gained even more.

Why?

Because what they did on the show couldn’t be replicated in their real, everyday lives.

Extreme environments create extreme results.

Real life requires sustainable habits.

What Actually Changed Me

I don’t have a miracle product to sell you.

I have:

My stories. My determination. My disappointments. My setbacks. My discipline. My “get back up” moments. Seeing my mom pass away.

I’m an athlete.

I’m a mom.

I’ve fallen off track more than once.

But I always come back.

Not because I’m perfect — but because health is a standard I live by.

It’s not something I visit when I feel uncomfortable in my skin.

It’s not something I borrow for a vacation.

It’s not something I panic about when summer hits.

It’s a daily choice.

Some days it looks strong.

Some days it looks messy.

But it continues.

Health Is a Standard, Not a Season

If wellness only exists when:

You’re motivated You’re inspired You’re desperate You’re chasing an event

…it won’t last.

Health has to become your baseline.

The way you think.

The way you eat.

The way you move.

The way you rest.

The way you talk to yourself.

It’s not about perfection.

It’s about returning.

Over and over again.

From Shine WellFest to Real Life

What I loved about Shine WellFest is that it wasn’t about a magic solution.

It was about resources.

Movement.

Community.

Awareness.

It was about understanding that wellness touches everything — physical, mental, emotional.

And that you can start wherever you are.

There is never a wrong time to become healthier.

But there is also no shortcut.

My Promise to You

I won’t sell you a quick fix.

I will share:

What’s worked for me. What hasn’t. What fired me up. What humbled me. What helped me get back up when I slipped.

Because real wellness?

It’s built quietly.

Repeatedly.

Imperfectly.

And that’s enough.
