Fighting for My Self-Care When Life Feels Heavy

This year has hit me like a ton of bricks.

I lost my mom suddenly.
I started a brand-new job right before she passed.
And somehow, in the middle of all of that, my brain still likes to revisit the very stressful teaching environment I left last October. I literally have dreams that I’m back there, dealing with the behavior challenges and lack of support that pushed me to make one of the hardest decisions of my life.

Grief, change, and stress have a way of piling up all at once. And when that happens, self-care is usually the first thing that wants to disappear.

But here’s the truth I keep coming back to:

If I don’t take care of my health, no one is going to magically do it for me.

Do I always want to work out? No.
Do I always want to make the healthier choice? Nope.
Do I sometimes want to sit on the couch and emotionally eat snacks? Absolutely.

I am not perfect. Not even close.

But I am worth fighting for.

And the more I sit with that statement, the more I realize how hard it is to give ourselves grace. Especially when we’re used to showing up for everyone else first.

This year has been heavy. Some days I feel strong and motivated. Other days I feel like I’m just trying to get through the day. And honestly? Both of those versions of me count.

Because the goal right now isn’t perfection.
The goal is forward movement.

Tiny steps. Imperfect effort. Showing up anyway.

And here’s a small but meaningful win: despite everything, I’m almost at my wellness goal of 10,000 points for the year. That represents hundreds of small choices to keep going — walks, workouts, healthy swaps, choosing sleep, choosing movement, choosing me.

It also happens to earn me $700, which is a pretty great bonus. But the real reward is proving to myself that even in a hard season, I can keep moving forward.

Slowly. Imperfectly. Consistently.

If you’re in a heavy season too, consider this your reminder:

You don’t have to do everything.
You don’t have to do it perfectly.
You just have to keep going.

You are worth fighting for.
